Portfolio-Tutorials 2020

Activity:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/10NWD-fHO1r7XLBiAXiXmTAIbmW1BsJ6HTEJGlHcRpf4/edit?usp=sharing

Here you have 15 famous paintings. Choose 10 and create your picture story.

The activity consisted of writing a collaborative story between four members based on famous paintings. We were free to decide the background and the continuity. We connected ideas and thought of the development of the story. They were part of my group: Juan Elia, Lucia Caviligone and Bianca Ieraci.

I believe that writing, creating and thinking a short story in groups it’s one of the best activities we did in tutorials. I learned how to combine ideas, how to write in parallel to another member and to leave my ideas and proud aside so that the story could be perfect in the end. Also, each of us gave their best effort while writing and in grammar so that we could have an interesting story as a result, we divided the paintings (three per person) and we had to continue writing from the paragraph the other wrote, obviously following the thread of the story.

Moreover, I consider my writing and ideas were pretty accurate and correct, I think that I did a very good job, and I’m proud of it. It was kind of limited space to put all of my ideas because there were three more members, but it was one of the best activities Pato assigned us. She did everything perfectly! Nothing to add or complain. By saying this, I would like to thank her for this task that was one of the last one we did in Tutorials. I’m very grateful to be here and have the opportunity to grow with her.

Literary Periods

Task 1: Read and investigate

Literary periods

Literary periods and movements

Task 2: Prepare a timeline

https://www.timetoast.com/timelines/2284281

Task 4: Which 3 periods do you like best? Explain why.

The three periods I like the mosts are the Romantic period, The Renaissance and Reformation period and The Enlightenment (Neoclassical) Period. To begin with, the Romantic period I consider that is one of the most beautiful and poetic in literature. Romantic poets wrote about nature, imagination, and individuality in England, Jane Austen in one of the most famous classical poet, who wrote some of the most recognize books in history, like “Pride and Prejudice”, “Jane Air” and “Sense and Sensibility”. Also, in this period the Gothic elements and writings, which I consider that are wonderful and a very deep literature, became one of the main genre.

Moreover, during the The Renaissance and Reformation period, wonderful writers such as Shakespeare, marked Queen Elizabeth’s reign by his work. Clearly, besides this huge meaning, Shakespeare’s poetry it’s that perfect that cant be describe.

Finally, The Enlightenment (Neoclassical) Period, where it increased influence of Classical literature upon these centuries and the reverence for logic and disdain for superstition. This ideas to reveal and create new logics in such a difficult time. I find it very interesting and revolutionary, but what i love the mosts, it’s that it wasn’t a war, it was through words, rhymes and letters. Poets and authors revealed their point of view of politics through their literature.

To conclude, in my opinion, this periods where the most marvellous and magnificent  in literature. Nowadays, literature it is not as classical as it was, it’s different, though, it make sense to me. I would like to analyse, “The Lonely Hearts Hotel”, which embrace gothic elements and it is placed during the Depression in Canada and United States.

Before starting reading the play “All My Sons” by Arthur Miller, we look up information about his life. Later on, we talk to our partner, share notes and wrote a biography with the 10 facts that together agree to be the most influential or the key events in Arthur Miller’s life.

Collaborative task

Arthur Miller Biography

  • He was born on born October 17 in 1915 in New York ,to an immigrant family of Polish and Jewish descent and died on February 10 in 2005 in Roxbury, Connecticut of heart failure.
  • The Miller family lost almost everything in the Wall Street Crash of 1929, and as a consequence of the depression they had to move from Manhattan to Flatbush, Brooklyn.
  • After he graduated from high school, Miller had to work to pay for college where he wrote his first plays
  • He was an American playwright, who combined social awareness with a searching concern for his characters inner lives
  • In 1956, Miller divorced his first wife, Mary Slattery, whom he had two children, Jane Ellen and Robert and a month later, Miller married actress and Hollywood sex symbol Marilyn Monroe
  • Miller continued to explore social and personal issues that probed the American psyche, though critical and commercial responses to the work didn’t garner the acclaim of his earlier productions.
  • His play Death of a Salesman, became one of the most famous American plays of its period. It is the tragedy of Willy Loman, a man destroyed by false values that are in large part the values of his society. For Miller, it was important to place “the common man” at the centre of a tragedy.
  • Miller had been exploring the ideas underlying Death of a Salesman since he was a teenager, when he wrote a story about a Jewish salesman, he also drew on memories of an uncle.
  • He also criticizes communism in his writing especially in his play the crucible
  • In 2002, Miller’s third wife, Morath, died. He soon was engaged to 34-year-old minimalist painter Agnes Barley but fell into ill health before they could walk down the aisle.

Individual task

  • How would you define a responsible person?

A responsible person is the one who is able to make consciously important decision and is the one who wants to improve himself in every task and opportunity they have. Also, in most of the cases they do not only want to improve them self, if not they want to help the others too. In addition, they are often disciplined, organised and respectful. Also, compassionate and honest. However, responsable people tend to go to an extreme, this means being too demanding on themselves. Finally, they doesn’t like to be told what to do.

  • Are you a responsible person? Why or why not? Give examples of people you know in your personal life or in the public domain who are responsible. How do these individuals support your definition?

I consider myself a responsible person because I know how to be organized, I like being motivated and trying to improve myself on different tasks. Whatsoever, sometimes I may be lazy and left somethings to do later and that might be risky. I know too many people that are responsible, mainly some classmates and also my dad and relatives. It does, they support my definition. Some are more self motivating and demanding than others, but the different personalities have somethings in common, that they are responsible.

How does one learn to become a responsible person?

It’s easy but not TOO easy. If someone want to become a responsible person they should give up some habits, they should motivate themself more and be more self demanding. If not, they will continue being lazy and irresponsible. Moreover, if someone wants to practice, they could afford an agenda and write tasks and organize the following day.

Who are the “teachers” and where do we find them in our lives?

Teacher are the ones who usually love learn and teach other what they had learned. In my opinion, there are two types of teachers. The first one is the one who studied and learn in college focusing on different subjects. Besides, we also have “teachers of life”, this are grandparents, parents, siblings, friends, teachers themselves too…etc, they will always give you an explanation or a advice whenever you need it.

Is being responsible a character trait that you value a lot?

Why or why not?

I like people being responsible because it shows which kind of person you are and some part of your personality. Besides, I do not judge people being irresponsible, I will always try to help and improve them when they need it.

The Golden Rule is “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.” What does this statement mean? Can you think of a situation in your own life in which you used this statement as the guiding principle for the action that you took? If “yes,” explain.

What i understand of this statement is that you do not have to do to others what you don’t like people doing to you. It happened to me a lot, when someone criticizes me and then I criticized that person, that is something that I learned to change.

ARTWORK ANALYSIS

Belen Brito Peret

1) Definition of art by Kandinsky

He started the lyrical abstraction and the expressionism.

In great art, the viewer feels good about himself. Such harmony or contrast of emotion can not be superficial or insignificant; in fact the tonality of an image can deepen or purify the viewer’s. These works of art at least preserve the soul of the gross; The legend, so to speak, to raise to a certain height, like the keys of intonation of the strings of an instrument. Through the image an awareness of the infinite is maintained: of the eternal within the finite; From the spiritual within the material, the unlimited is shaped. Between these two definitions we can approach a more sublime understanding of the nature of art.

2)

This artwork made by DIEGO GRAVINESE, an Argentinian artist, matches with the definition of Kandinsky because by admiring this image the viewers can feel harmony and different emotions. He also plays with and combine colors making a real image, that transmits a massage by painting different shapes, materials, contrast and variety of colors.

3)  BORDAL0 ii (Portugal)

  1. It is a sculpture and an installation, made from trash highlights perils of wastefulness. This plastic rhino made by Bordalo ii is exposed in Lisbon, Portugal with other artworks of this artist.
  2. This sculpture, is a Rhino made of trash and other materials, as plastic. It is a huge realistic [sure?] sculpture, by which he represent the world we live, how animals are shown as humans, «The idea is not to make something beautiful from garbage, it is to make people stop and look and understand what is behind», said the artist. He wants to transmit the message that is behind of what he creates and shows to the society. This piece of art is placed in Portugal.
  3. i)  This sculpture made by Bordalo ii, is a construction made of plastic and trash. It has a simple structure as it has low number of levels and is centralized on one member, witches in this case is the animal. Moreover, this artwork is asymmetrical because it has a lack of equality or equivalence as it is built.
  1. ii) Bordalo uses warm, cool, light and dark colors. For example, green, blue and yellow. Also, he uses both of saturated and desaturated, as white and black. Moreover, the other groups of colors that he uses polychromatic. Monochromatics are set of colors that all have the same hue blended with different levels of white and black and the polychromatism that are multiple colors.
  2. d) When I first saw the image, I look at the body of the animal and the colors he uses. Then I realised of what the sculpture is made of and the materials. Also, how realistic it is, according to the dimensions. Moreover, I focus on the background, where the sculpture is placed and I connect with my thoughts on how the animal is related with the walls and the contrast between the colorful animal with the brick walls. Finally, I thought about the message that is what I consider the most important when analysing a picture or an image.

  1. e) When I saw the image for the first time, firstly I thought that it was a joyful and great sculpture. But when i started analysing it i could understand what the artist wants to transmit and make people conscious about the message and what he decides to create artwork related with animals, to show how animals should be, free as it is art. However, the society do not let this happen because of the human consumption and killing of animals.
  2. f) In my opinion the artist wanted to express the suffering of animals. He could had put the sculpture in an open place, like their natural environment, but Bordalo expose the realistic performance between walls, I think that the walls represents like cages in which animals are nowadays. Not only cows and pigs are being killed, also animals as rhinos that are in the zoos are extinguishing every day.  Almost every artwork of Bordalo are animals, so he wants to transmit the sufferment? and make people think and be aware of what is happening in the world. He turns trash into animals to remind us about pollution.

4) “Rock and roll ain’t Pollution”, a song of the band AC/DC, talks about the pollution in the world and how we need to focus on the future and not in the past because we are going to end up world if we not help to change the environment in which we are living. Bordalo, the artist of this sculpture, turn trash into animals to remind us about the problem that humans are commiting to our world by killing an consuming animals in this case.

Script performance Duchamp and Baroness Elsa von Freytag.

(Telephone conversation between Duchamp and the Baroness)

(The baroness in her house moving around and picking up things playing around with them- Duchamp walking in the street wandering the city)

Baroness: Marcel! How wonderful to hear from you! It’s been a while since we last talked. Lately so many objects are reminding me of you.

Duchamp: Baroness, my darling. I have been lacking inspiration since I last saw you, you are my muse. I was just wandering through the street, thinking of what I can do in my next artwork but nothing seemed to come up to my mind so I figured I should call you. Your imagination and creativity are otherworldly.

Baroness: Oh Marcel, you flatter me. I do acknowledge my ideas are kind of crazy, but after all I do have fun and live my life to the fullest. I was thinking maybe we could collaborate and create an artwork together, something new and exciting that can challenge the old-fashioned and boring society we live in.

Duchamp: I agree with you completely. Just tell me about the idea you have for this new artwork so that I can start working on it.

Baroness: Okay, I will, but don’t you dare do it on your own Marcel. I trust you, but I can’t deny the fact that it’s said that you can be deceitful.

Duchamp: I wouldn’t dare. You know how much I adore you. You are the most deep and beautiful art piece I’ve ever seen.

Baroness: Please, I’m out of your league. So the other day I saw an empty barrel and I started thinking how much alike we all are to barrels. We are filled with hopes and when we realize that not all of us can reach our hopes we are empty. Just as when you’re drunk. Just as the barrel.

Duchamp: I don’t get where you’re going with this

Baroness:I thought it could be an excellent artwork. It has a meaning. And it will shock people.

Duchamp: but is already made

Baroness: I know but they didn’t giveput it that meaning to it. I would be givingputting it, I would be the artist.

Duchamp: I see.

Baroness: I also thought I could hit it and maybe break it a little.

Ducham: Great idea. I always saw the spark on you Baroness.

Baroness:But I’m doubting my idea because I don’t think it would attract the audience.

Duchamp: It’s a great idea, I think that it would have a huge audience and catch the interest of people. It may even revolutionize the art world.

Baroness:If you say so I would do it as soon as possible but please, remember not to steal my idea.

Duchamp:If you repeat it many times I will steal your great idea. It seems you don’t trust me while I always trusted you.

(Thinking in his head he will stealsteall the idea and he will become famous with it)

Baroness: You would never consider doingto do such a thing, Duchamp! That will betray my trust and I would never forgive you. Stealing someone else’s idea is a crime. I warn you for the last time, Duchamp. Do not turn my idea into one of your inspirations.

Duchamp: I already told you, your inspiration on this artwork would not be one of mines. I prefer creating something new, different…something that would shock people and make them want more.

Baroness: That’s what I mean! I have many ideas in my mind for preparing my own works from utilitarian objects, and what it is important is that it was my fantastic idea. As well as my clothes, they could be full of strange objects, even garbage, but in this way I can reassemble and modify to give them a different life, a more beautiful aspect.

Duchamp: Yes Baroness, I am getting tired of you.  I think I already made it clear that I will not use your idea, I will come up with a better one and I will also be better known than you because  you don’t concentrate on seeking the prestige of the academy, and if you don’t show your ideas to the world, then they are useless.

Baroness: I know, that’s why I came to ask for your help. I would be very grateful if we do this together, I alsoalso I think we could be a great team because we have a great imagination.

Duchamp: Yes, I believe that  indeed. Well I have to leave you because I’m almost to enter a place. See you!

Baroness: Ok! I hope you think about what I told you and don’t disappoint me because I appreciate you so much. Bye, I believe that I will see you soon!

The Fountain

By Duchamp

Is it art? Why?

The recognised artwork called The Fountain made by Duchamp, some people doesn’t consider it art, although, I think that it is. Why? Because he shows that by having simple, common object you can create art. Duchamp proved to have an idea and a meaning. He wanted to transmit art to the audience and to the world, the significant meaning of his art. By transforming the urinal to a piece of art, Duchamp, was questioning people and proving to the museum and academics and to all the people who criticized him, how something without a meaning could become something famous and recognised.

Furthermore, with the meaningful ideas and the point to prove people about the artwork, he could finally convince people about his art and to prove how wrong those who thought that changing the meaning of an object or instrument wasn’t art. This was too important and have a great impact to the population, because they started reading about  the Urinal and creating their own artwork inspired on him. Duchamp convinced people of this, using him as an example and inspiration to them to create a readymade.

Ramiro A:

Portfolio: When we were old

On one of our last literatures classes, we got in pairs and choose a poem from the Part 4 of the “Songs of Ourselves”. With Bianca Ieraci, we decided to look up information about Robert Browning, who wrote Love in a Life. After reading about his past and lovers, we finally started reading  the poem.

Moreover, when we finished, we look up:

  • Literary devices
  • Tone
  • Themes
  • Voice…etc
  • information about the author

This is my presentation:

https://www.slideshare.net/mobile/Pato_Ch/love-in-a-life-robert-browning

Finally, we wrote an essay based on other author that a different group analyzed. My essay is about the poem “When you are Old” bu W. B. Yeast. It’s a very interesting and lovely poem of a woman’s life, the journey from when she was young until the present.

To conclude, Im satisfied with my essay and the analysis that we did, however, I could use more literary devices and analyses more in deep the quotes. Also, it can be related with our nowadays life, because it shows how a man is looking for his dear love the journey and the reflection when se was young.

This is my essay:

Comment closely on how the journey from youth to old age is portrayed in the poem «When you are Old» by W. B. Yeats.

In the poem “When you are Old”, written by William Butler Yeats, the author portrays the journey from youth to old age as a reflection comparing her life with her future and the way in which the person regrets of his personal actions. An elderly woman recalling memories of her younger days. A past lover whispers to her as she looks through a photo album. Basically, the writer is showing that as the woman gets older, she is alone, but she does not have to be lonely. She will always have her memories for companionship in the photo album.

At the beginning of the poem, in the first stanza, the poet says that as this old woman is old, she should take up a book and read it slowly. “And nodding by the fire”, she is feeling sleepy and sitting alone in the long winter nights. We can compare her grey hair with all his past, how much she had lived as a symbol of old age. “Full of sleep’. The word “sleep” can be explained as “death”, because it is a natural laziness that comes in a human being as she grows.

In the second stanza, the speaker represents the theme of reminiscence. The author makes the person in the poem, remember that in her youth, she was loved by many men.”Glad grace”, she will remember her beauty and youth that have faded into the past, so has their love. Some love her because of her beauty and some with a true love, a faithful love to her soul. This shows how the main woman of the poem suffers this transition of remembering old past memories to the present.

The author representa her souls as a “pilgrim”, this is a traveler, literally one who has come from far away, who is on a journey to a holy place. Typically, this is a physical journey to some place of special significance to the adherent of a particular religious belief system. This is compare as her souls, travelling in time, from the past to the present, to the future. There was one man only who loved her souls, not her physical beauty alone but also the purity of her soul behind her beautiful shape.

In the last stanza, he presents a situation focus in the woman’s old age. She remember that she rejected this man who loved her that this memorie and prediction will make her sad. She gave up her opportunity to be with him, because t seems clearly that he stopped looking for her. “And paced upon the mountains overhead

And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.” This quote predicts(future) that because of her rejection, both will never find peace. One day they will die, become part of the sky and stars as being part of a memorie.

In conclusion, the journey from youth to old age is portrayed in the poem throughout the three stanzas. We can understand how the author, William Butler, conveys the idea of past, present and future in an old woman’s life. Bringing to life, through imagery, old memories and places.
